Sir Jude Nnam is a highly revered Nigerian composer, choral conductor, and multi-instrumentalist, widely celebrated for his immense contributions to Catholic church music. Often affectionately called “Ancestor,” he’s recognized for his unique musical style and prolific output.
Born and raised in Enugu, Nigeria, and originally from the Igbo tribe, Sir Jude Nnam began his musical journey in his local church choir. He pursued formal music education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Trinity College of Music London, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Musical Career & Achievements
Sir Jude Nnam has composed and arranged over 2000 original pieces in numerous languages, including English, Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba. His distinctive style seamlessly blends rich African rhythms with traditional church music, creating a sound that resonates deeply with audiences.
- Directing the “Papal Choir of a Thousand Voices” during Pope John Paul II’s visit to Nigeria in 1998.
- Serving as Music Director at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral in Abuja, for the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, and for Catholic Television, Abuja.
- Holding the position of National Music Director for the National Catholic Liturgical Council in Nigeria.
- Being endorsed as a Yamaha Ambassador for Nigeria for their keyboard products in May 2017.
- Collaborating with prominent Nigerian musicians such as Frank Edwards, Prof Dan Agu, Dr. Adebowale, and Prof Laz Ekwueme.
Legacy and Philanthropy
Sir Jude Nnam’s music is widely used in Catholic churches across Nigeria and internationally, solidifying his enduring impact on liturgical music. Beyond his musical endeavors, he established the Jude Nnam Foundation, dedicated to supporting the clinical and educational needs of children with Down syndrome. Although briefly kidnapped in November 2024, he was safely released, underscoring the challenges faced by public figures in the region.
